Cooper: Making Tires for People...Not Just Cars
Cooper Tire was started in 1914 in Akron, Ohio by two brothers-in-law, John F. Schaefer and Claude E. Hart. The in-laws began by founding a business called the M&M Manufacturing Company, which was focused on supplying tire patches, tire repair kits, and tire cement. The men purchased the Giant Tire & Rubber Company, a tire rebuilding business, the following year and moved it to Findlay, Ohio.
The Cooper name came into play in 1919 when auto parts dealer I.J. Cooper founded The Cooper Corporation, a new tire manufacturing business, also in Findlay, Ohio. In 1930, the two companies and the Falls Rubber Company merged, forming The Master Tire & Rubber Company, which became known as the Cooper Tire & Rubber Company in 1946.
